Soft Stuff Ice Cream Verified listing

In 1984, Soft Stuff Ice Cream of Ellicott City, MD made its debut. It was and still is a family owned business, originally owned by the Weal family, Ed, Joan, Michael and Steve. The idea for the store was a result of Ed Weal's vacations to Rehobeth Beach, Delaware where he would stroll down the boardwalk and visit the various soft ice cream shops...asking questions about the businesses and eventually presenting his idea to the family for a new business in Ellicott City. The family already owned the Forest Motel on Route 40 since 1967 and it seemed like a perfect location and fit for the area. The ice cream shop was built in front of and contiguous to the motel and opened in May of 1984.

It did not take long for Soft Stuff to become the "go to" place for families in the local area when the Winter faded away and temperatures warmed up all the way through to the Fall. The philosophy from the very beginning was to have a quality ice cream product, at a fair price and give people more than they expect with large portions!

After 29 years in the same location, Soft Stuff, now owned by Michael and Steve Weal, temporarily closed its doors in October of 2012 in order for the family to be part of the construction of a multi-use residential and retail center on the property. Where once stood the original ice cream store along with the Forest Motel, the Forest Diner and several private homes on Frederick Road, the new Forest Green Center includes apartments, restaurants, specialty eateries, and personal service shops, as well as the new and bigger and better Soft Stuff Ice Cream.

Soft Stuff Ice Cream has re-opened with indoor seating (as well as outdoor seating), a larger menu with up to 12 flavors of ice cream, snow balls, milk shakes, and sundaes but more importantly the same great quality and richness in our ice cream that our customers loved for the past 34 years.
